Bhasma
Ayurvedic Bhasma is recognized as a sophisticated form of ancient nanomedicine. It consists of metals, minerals, or animal products that have undergone rigorous purification and repeated incineration (Puta system) to be converted into ultra-fine, biologically active ash.
Key Characteristics & Production
- Nanoparticle Form: Modern analysis confirms Bhasma particles typically range between 1 and 100 nanometers, allowing for high bioavailability and effective absorption into body tissues.
- Preparation Process:
- Shodhana (Purification): Eliminating impurities using herbal juices or decoctions.
- Marana (Incineration): Repeated heating at high temperatures to eliminate toxicity and achieve the desired chemical state (e.g., converting iron to magnetite).
- Traditional Quality Tests: Properly prepared Bhasma must be tasteless, lusterless (does not shine in sunlight), and so fine that it floats on water (Varitara) and can enter the crevices of fingertips
